Is that something serious, or did I just spill my drink? Here’s a quick list of what those fluids look, smell and feel like, as well as what they might be. No, we don’t recommend you taste them to verify. • Clear and underneath your air conditioner or under the end of your tailpipe. It’s likely something as simple as condensed water. This probably doesn’t need immediate attention, but you should keep checking periodically. Your eyes and nose can be helpful to spotting things that need attention on your vehicle. When in doubt, head on over to see us so a technician can check it out. Taking care of it sooner rather than later could save you an expensive repair down the road. McLearen Shell Always on Guard (TMPS)Posted March 22, 2026 1:04 PMOne of the most important things you can do to keep your vehicle running safely is to make sure your tires are properly inflated. If one or more is vastly over- or underinflated, that has the potential to cause major handling problems and may result in a dangerous accident. All vehicles in recent years are equipped with Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, or TPMS. One system uses small sensors in the tires that continually check the pressure in each tire. That sensor sends a signal to computers in your vehicle which turns on an instrument panel light warning of low pressure when at least one is very low. Or it may update a numeric reading on your instrument panel which gives you an approximation of how many PSI (pounds per square inch) of air is in each tire. Another system works with your antilock brake system to measure the size of your vehicle’s tires. When one wheel is going faster than another, it will spin faster. A computer sees that and alerts you that tire’s diameter is smaller than the others and therefore must be underinflated. No matter what system you have, it’s also helpful for you to know how much pressure each tire is supposed to be inflated to. You can find that on a label on the driver’s side door sill. In addition, the TPMS system should not be used as a substitute for checking your tires with a tire gauge since the TPMS accuracy usually isn’t quite as precise. Keep in mind that tire sensors can fail, so each system acts as a backup for the other. Since many vehicles these days don’t have spare tires, it’s good to know that your TPMS can warn you if you have a leak in one of your tires. If you get a low-pressure warning, many systems will tell you which tire is low, so you can do your own visual check. Often you can see if you’ve picked up a nail or a screw if it’s sticking out of the tread or near the sidewall. Being able to receive an early warning from your vehicle of abnormal tire pressure may give you a chance to safely drive to a service center before your tire slowly goes completely flat (which can ruin the tire and badly damage the rim). It also may ultimately prevent you from being stranded somewhere with a flat tire or, most importantly, having a sudden blowout on the road. McLearen Shell No Charge (Why Won’t My Battery Hold a Charge?)Posted March 15, 2026 12:37 PMWhen your vehicle’s battery is dead, it leaves you with that horrible, helpless feeling. A dead battery means it won’t hold a charge, and there are several reasons it won’t. One is age. Batteries have chemical and electrical systems in them that create power, and as time goes by, they won’t work well anymore. They may have been degraded by exposure to extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. Batteries have a code on them that can tell you when they were manufactured. Another reason your battery won’t hold a charge is corrosion on the terminals, the metal posts where your battery cables are connected. A chemical reaction between the battery’s acid and air creates a salty moisture that can corrode those terminals. If your vehicle’s alternator is not working properly, it won’t charge your battery as it is designed to, and the battery may lose its charge more quickly than it should. Another possibility is there might be an electrical component that’s staying on when you turn your vehicle off, and it may slowly drain the battery so much that there won’t be enough power to start your vehicle. When you notice any of these things, bring your vehicle in so a technician can evaluate what’s causing the problems. We will give your electrical system a thorough inspection and run tests that can tell the health of the battery and other components. You may be able to avoid problems by having us evaluate your electrical system regularly as part of a periodic maintenance schedule. McLearen Shell STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT STEERING (Loose Steering)Posted March 8, 2026 1:02 PMPerhaps you've heard someone use the term "loose steering." And it's pretty much what it sounds like. You turn the steering wheel and the vehicle's wheels don't seem to go exactly where you thought you were pointing them. You have to constantly make steering adjustments. Loose steering is sloppy steering, and it can be a safety hazard. You need to be able to control your vehicle with pretty much the same precision as the way it was when it came off the assembly line. If the steering in your vehicle is starting to feel loose and sloppy, there may be some significant suspension issues that need examining by a trained technician. How do you know if your vehicle needs to be looked at? Try turning the steering wheel and see how much play is in it. One rule of thumb: if you can turn it the distance of a quarter and a dime placed side by side without seeing the outside wheels move, it's time to have it inspected by one of our technicians. Our McLearen Shell technician will examine those components that are supposed to work together to make sure your steering is tight and precise. They are linked together by things called (of course) linkages. When these linkage components were new, they all fit together tightly and moved together to make sure your wheels responded quickly and precisely to your movements of the steering wheel. But hit a few potholes, travel over a couple of rough railroad tracks and those metal components can be damaged or bent. Given enough time, they will simply wear out. Our trained McLearen Shell technician can inspect all of those parts and determine what needs to be repaired and/or replaced. Keep your steering tight. Loose or sloppy steering can be dangerous. Thank goodness it usually warns you in plenty of time before it fails completely. Just straight talk… about steering. McLearen Shell Stop! And See Us (Brake Pad Replacement)Posted March 1, 2026 12:58 PMIf you’ve ever driven a bicycle with hand brakes, you’ll probably understand how the brake pads on your vehicle work. Bicycle brakes use a system that squeezes the bike wheel’s rim with a pair of cushioned pads activated by your hand squeezing the hand brakes on your handlebars. The friction of those pads stops the wheel. That’s the same principle used for the wheels on your vehicle. Step on the brake pedal and that causes pads to put pressure on discs in the wheels called rotors. Those pads create friction and stop the wheels from turning. Brake pads in vehicles are made from several different materials. The pads most commonly used are ceramic or a combination of metals. The friction that stops your vehicle generates heat and wears both the pads and, eventually, the rotors, too. That means that, over time, both are going to need replacing to work properly. One sign brake wear is getting noticeable may be when you hear squeaking when you stop. Or you might feel the vehicle pulling to one side during braking or the brake light on your dash illuminates. All are signs to bring your vehicle in to us for inspection and service. When your vehicle is in for brake pad replacement, our technician will check other components such as the brake calipers, rotors and lines. Brakes are something you should have inspected at regular intervals because they are a vital safety component of your vehicle. Took our Acura RDX in for brake service today. The staff at McLearen Shell did an excellent job, replacing the front discs & rotors. They advised that the rear pads still had 50% material remaining. Have had a variety of automobiles serviced at this service station over the last 25 years and there service remains outstanding and very reasonably priced. Highly recommended.
